Overview

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the Camp Director the Excursion Coordinator will be responsible for facilitating the YMCA Mill Hollow Excursion Program’s planning, overseeing, and leading the Excursion and BOLD & GOLD staff for the YMCA of Northern Utah as well as the background work working with families, partners, and the public. Excursion activities include leading hiking, paddling, climbing and/or backpacking trips over varied terrain, overseeing rock climbing, and helping teens develop hard and soft leadership skills. Responsibilities include developing and delivering staff training, developing curriculum, preparing trips, providing and/or arranging transportation of campers and staff, overseeing, and supporting staff, communicating with participant families, assisting with the program’s social media accounts, living in tents when off-site, ensuring activity and equipment safety, problem-solving any issues that arise during trips, filling in for absent in-ratio staff as needed, and general supervision of staff and campers both and on- and off-site. This is a seasonal position.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Camp Director on staff training and programming logistics.
  • Supervise and check in with Excursion Instructors regularly and provide staff with positive and constructive feedback to ensure the highest quality programming. Work collaboratively with the Excursion Instructors and provide staff with positive and constructive feedback to ensure the highest quality programming. 
  • Take on the continued development of the Junior Instructors Training session and volunteering aspects.
  • Oversee program gear and equipment care, maintenance, and use along with the Camp Director.
  • Oversee program social media accounts with the support of the Camp Director.
  • Create an inclusive and brave environment for all in the outdoors through an IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access) lens.
  • Implement conflict mediation, restorative practice, and YMCA youth development skills.
  • Assist in surveying participants and capturing weekly stories from groups along with the Coordinator.
  • Assist Instructors with food and equipment preparations prior to all trips and ensure that it is cleaned and properly stored after each trip.
  • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.  
  • Ensure that the needs of all program participants are met.  
  • Ensure the safety of participants through adherence to emergency and safety protocols and procedures.  
  • Build respectful and meaningful relationships with other staff, parents, program participants, donors, and volunteers. Model Y values through positive relationships with staff and program participants.  
  • Maintain professional image through dress, nametag, actions and relationships with others.   
  • Maintain and submit accurate reports in a timely manner.     
  • Problem-solve when unexpected challenges on trips arise.  
  • Demonstrate the core values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility in all dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.  
  • Demonstrate competencies in and willingness to develop as a Cause-Driven Leader.  
  • Deliver the highest quality of program and customer service.  
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to work in excess of a 40-hour week with irregular work hours.

  • May be exposed to adverse outdoor weather conditions and air quality at elevations 8,000-13,000ft.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the ground, in water, and at heights) for long periods of time.
  • Ability to respond appropriately and effectively to emergency situations such as but not limited to fire evacuations, severe weather, or a missing camper.

Employees must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 60lbs, safely travel over varied terrain (trails, tree roots, boulder/rock fields, shoreline, mud, snow, ice) up to 12 miles per day, be comfortable spending multiple days and/or weeks in a wilderness setting, communicate both verbally and non-verbally with other staff, volunteers, and participants.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age: 21 years.
  • Experience working with youth in outdoor environments required. 
  • Experience supervising staff required. 
  • Proficiency in backcountry terrian equired. 
  • Experience cooking and camping in the outdoors is required. 
  • Current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and CPR certification (or ability to obtain prior to first day of work).
  • Meet the YMCA of Northern Utah Driver Requirements.
  • Previous experience working with people across multiple dimensions of diversity (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).
  • Previous experience with BOLD & GOLD is preferred.
  • Being multilingual is preferred.
